 If you are cloning (upgrading) drives use Acronis instead November 25, 2008

I spent nearly 8 hours trying to get Norton Ghost to leave me with a cloned drive I could actually boot from in XP Pro. Acronis did the job first time in under 2 hours (I had it automatically recopy the entire disk). I'm sold on Acronis.

This is a great product and a must have for those who don't want to have to reload everything on their computer following the inevitable hard drive failure.

I have used Ghost since it was PowerQuest Drive Image 7. Ghost 10 adds several features: (1) it manages full and incremental backup sets; (2) it lets you open and browse backup sets. You have the choice between rolling in an entire disk image or just restoring selected files. The Ghost 10 CD is bootable to allow bare-metal restores. This feature has saved me several times (disk crashes, Windows XP corruption). The boot CD itself will detect and repair certain Windows registry hive corruptions. This feature fixed two PC's at work that were blue-screening on startup. Really neat stuff.
I have Ghost 10 on 2 PC's at home, one laptop, and 4 PC's at work. All run Windows XP Pro. No installation troubles, no noticeable performance hit (except when backing up). In summary, Ghost 10 is working really well for me, and I recommend it. Best configuration is with an external USB drive for image storage.
